Ann Romney has got to be one of the sweetest, kindest, and most thoughtful women I’ve ever met in my life. She once again shows, just what wonderful thing that this country will have with her as our First Lady. What a woman!

From The Charleston Post and Courier.

Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding, Inc. of Johns Island will host its first Blue Ribbon Luncheon at noon Oct. 18 at the Francis Marion Hotel in downtown Charleston.

The featured speaker is Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Ann Romney will share information about her continuing efforts on behalf of disadvantaged children and women, including, as first lady of Massachusetts, her personal battle with multiple sclerosis and the role of equine therapeutic riding programs for children with disabilities.

Proceeds from this luncheon will aid CATR’s scholarship students taking part in therapeutic riding programs over the next year.

Call CATR at 559-6040 for reservations. The cost is $60 per person. (Tax deduction amount will be stated later with a notice in the program.)

Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding works to improve the lives of children and adults with disabilities at the areas only nationally accredited therapeutic riding center.

I think that these programs are invaluable for those that use them. We have considered similar programs for our children, although we’ve always had something to hold us up in pursuing it very far. I should put a little more effort towards it again. Great to see Ann out there like she is. She’s such an asset to Romney’s team.

Warmth, confidence, and a radiant sense of peace are the qualities Ann Romney gracefully exudes as I sit down next to her on the returning flight from Boston to Long Beach. It’s been a long day “dialing for dollars” from the floor of the Boston Garden. And now, I’m headed home while Ann is on her way to Simi Valley, where she spends a week every month bonding with her horses, even staying on the premises where they board. These “breaks” from the campaign trail are both beneficial to her health and her sanity, and it is obvious she looks forward to the R&R she finds with her horses, a good history book, and a game of Sudoku.

Ann and Autumn on airplane

The Ann Romney we see staring in admiration at her husband during their public appearances is authentic, bold, and completely confident that the man she fell in love with during her teens is indeed doing the right thing for the country. When asked how she feels about taking on such an enormous endeavor as a presidential campaign, she calmly says, “I have no fear, none at all. I know we are doing what we are supposed to, and no matter how things turn out, I know we will be okay. Everything will be fine.”

Ann says she first knew Mitt was destined for a future as big as a Pennsylvania Avenue address when she met him in high school. However, she wasn’t exactly sure how they’d get there. But now, she is “truly overwhelmed by all the support we have received. It’s obvious that this is greater than us all.”

While Ann says she thoroughly enjoys the excitement every day brings on the campaign trail meeting “the blanket of people” across the nation who support the Romneys, she is positively giddy about reuniting with her horses. She generously spent our flight’s take off with me answering questions, discussing her health and family, and even looking at pictures of my kids with a genuine smile and interest. Here’s what she had to say about her husband’s campaign, her family, and the future of our country.

Romney for President Photos/Abby Brack

AM: What kind of future would you like to see for your grandchildren?

AR: Good question. First, I’d like them to live in a safe and secure

America. Secondly, I’d like to see great educational opportunities for all children. And I’d like to ensure that they grow up in a family-friendly environment.

AM: How you do you keep your family ties strong through the chaos and stress of a presidential campaign?

AR: We all talk and email a lot. And the whole family looks forward to our annual vacations. We know that we are each other’s support system.

AM: How do you keep the negative comments said about your husband from affecting you?

AR: We really just try to follow Mitt’s example.  He knows that criticism comes with the territory when you’re running for President, but he prefers to focus on all the great people we meet across the country and the great things he wants to accomplish as President.  I think we’ve been very fortunate for all the support and encouragement we’ve received during this campaign.

AM: What initiatives would you support as First Lady?

AR: I’d like to bring a greater awareness to MS. Also, I’d like to focus on helping at-risk youth, and inspire kids to make good decisions. And I’d like to emphasize the importance of waiting to have children, and the necessary role fathers have in families.

AM: Many women are excited about the prospect of a female presidential candidate, and will perhaps choose their candidate in this election based on gender alone. What about Mitt (besides his good looks and charm) will attract female voters to the Romney campaign?

AR: Mitt’s policies on issues such as health care and education will appeal to women voters. They are issues where he has a strong track record in Massachusetts. He has made insurance affordable and portable, and is able to address the educational needs of our children better than other candidates.

AM: How has your history with Multiple Sclerosis affected the way your husband looks at healthcare issues?

AR: It has certainly changed both of us, as we are more sensitive to those who deal with health issues. Mitt hopes to bring a more accessible and affordable health care plan to everyone. My MS has influenced us in a broader sense, too. We are more sympathetic to anyone going through any type of hardship. We meet lots of people going through tough times, and we sympathize.

AM: What is it about Mitt that keeps him, someone who has proven very successful in many areas, so modest and approachable?

AR: At Mitt’s very core, he recognizes that we’re all children of the same God.  Everyone has struggles, and those who have been given a lot have to be more willing to give to others. He is a person who feels strongly that it is his duty to serve others.

It was a pleasure getting to know Ann Romney better. She radiates the best qualities of a wife, mother, grandmother, the kind of woman you’d want as a friend, and conceivably our future First Lady. It is obvious that the beautiful woman standing next to the man has significantly influenced the man himself. And these two make a great team. We look forward to watching the Romneys on their road to the White House!

Blog by Presidential Candidate’s Five Sons Reveals G-Rated Details of Former Governor’s Family Life

Wholesome does not really begin to describe the five adult children of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who for the past few weeks have been sharing such details on Five Brothers, their blog and the most popular feature on the former Massachusetts governor’s campaign Web site. The blog is yet another medium to convey the image of dedicated family man that is an essential part of Romney’s identity as a candidate. Earlier this week, while most of his opponents introduced themselves during the Republican presidential debate by highlighting their résumés, Romney started with, “I’m a husband, a father, a grandfather . . . .”

Ann Romney was in Arizona today, hosting a “Women for Mitt” event. On hand, at the gathering, was photographer, Mark Mably, who independently video-taped and put together a beautiful montage of the day’s events. He was genuinely impressed with the sincerity, ease and confidence of Ann Romney. He commented:

“One could ramble endlessly about the embraceable grace with which Mrs. Romney carries herself in a crowd, but I’ve got a unique perspective so I’ll talk about that. Today, I photographed a luncheon as part of the Women for Mitt kickoff. The festivities began and there were about 20 guests invited to be photographed with Mrs. Romney. Photographing the same person 20 times next to 20 different people is a lesson in psychology for one willing to learn it. Here’s what I mean. I watched Mrs. Romney throughout the session (about 25 minutes). She is not a fake laugher or insincere on any level. I occasionally am lucky enough to photograph people with that extreme level of comfort in the person they are, but rarely does one see it in the political arena. Mrs. Romney is gracious and sympathetic and you could feel a ‘mom’ vibe from her too. Photographically speaking, in a posed setting, she comes across consistently confident.”

Read his entire report of the day and watch the beautiful video montage here.

Mrs. Ann Romney
Photo from
Five Brothers Blog

I realize it’s early in the campaign, but as a wife and a mother, I cannot help but notice that not a lot has been mentioned in the MSM yet about potential First Ladies, and the importance of the role they play in a Presidency. In reality, it is a factor that should be taken as seriously as the candidate himself. Like the President, the First Lady represents us all, and I will be forever appreciative to Laura Bush for returning a more traditional sense of dignity, charm, and graciousness back into the White House.

In recent campaigns, exposure and background of potential First Ladies has actually hurt a candidate. I remember the hilarious emails, with photo’s attached, of “The Right Stuff/The Wrong Stuff” showing Laura Bush as The Right Stuff, and “the other candidates wife” as The Wrong Stuff. Could it be true that a majority of American’s have certain expectations for the role of First Lady, just as they do the President? And would it not also be true that, while we have endured First Ladies that have broken that mold and that some may have been comfortable with, most American’s seemed uncomfortable with a non-traditional First Lady.

Unlike the pleasant and frequent exposure that Ann Romney seems to be receiving, I have had only brief sightings of the other candidates’ wives, or the wives of the “johnny-come-lately” possible candidates, for that matter. Actually, if curiousity motivates you enough, you can go looking for most of the candidates wives by conducting an internet search. I hope to think they are in attendance at their husbands various fund raisers, events, and television interviews, and that perhaps I am just tuning in to the wrong shows, at the wrong times, or looking at the wrong websites. Ann Romney, however, seems to be wherever Mitt goes, and she certainly brings with her a loving, gentle, wise, and genuine ladylike presence. The Romney’s are more often seen together, than not. They definitely compliment each other; their strengths seem to merge when they are with each other, and it seems obvious that they take great joy and comfort in each others company.

Knowing that Ann & Mitt Romney have raised five boys, and have quite an extended family, including 5 daughters-in law and 10 grandchildren, only strengthens my admiration for her. The fact that the Romney’s have been married just once, to each other, is also another source of the great confidence that I have in them. There is no denying Ann Romney is a beautiful woman, and in terrific shape, for a mother of five and grandmother. I have no doubt that she has experienced her share of hard work, sacrifice and heartache. Her life has been touched by illness, only to battle back through the strength of both her family and her faith.

null

Her smile is genuine, and her love for her husband and her family, this country and it’s people, radiates through in her openess, humor, and honesty when she speaks. She has given of herself to many causes, and it is evident that there are many people’s lives she has touched who admire and respect her deeply. It’s easy to see that, considering they have been married for 38 years, the Romney’s are still crazy about each other… I had to laugh when Mitt called her a “Babe” during a national television interview, and it has been written that he fills the house with Lilacs for her as a Mother’s Day tradition… these certainly seem like genuine endearments to me. He refers to her as his CEO, and values her opinions and input, most specifically on character, and matters of the heart. Mitt says that one of her strongest character traits is that “she is extremely, totally, entirely honest. She is incapable either through her eyes or her mouth of lying.

null

As the campaign progresses, and we get to know more about each of the candidates and their wives, one can be assured that Ann Romney accompanies her husband in his campaign because she wants to be there. Not because she required by duty, or that her intent is to effect policy. She is there to support her husband, to give him strength and joy, and to offer herself up for this countries considerations as an intelligent, honest, devoted, committed, strong, gracious, charming and beautiful First Lady.
